The most common driver-facing symptom is a Drivetrain Malfunction, drive moderately message on the iDrive screen, usually with a heavy reduction in power (limp mode).
On a scan, the DME typically stores one or more of these:
- 120308 Charging pressure control, plausibility: pressure too low
- 120408 Charging pressure control, switch-off as a consequence
- 123401 / 123402 Electric wastegate actuator, position control deviation
Physical symptoms include a high-pitched whining or siren-like noise from the engine bay that rises with engine speed, blue or grey smoke from the exhaust under acceleration (oil seal failure), and a clear lack of boost and throttle response.
What does BMW fault code 120308 mean?
120308 means the DME asked for a certain boost pressure and the actual pressure came in too low, so the reading is implausible. On the B38 it points to the turbocharger or its boost control: a failing electric wastegate actuator, a leaking or cracked charge pipe, or a worn turbo. It is frequently stored together with 120408, and with 123401 or 123402 when the wastegate actuator itself is at fault. Scan before replacing anything, because a split boost pipe produces the same code as a dead turbo at a fraction of the cost.

Important: This Does Not Fit Every B38
The BMW 1.5 litre three cylinder comes in two versions that do not interchange. B38B15 is longitudinal, fitted to rear-wheel-drive cars, and that is what this turbocharger is for. B38A15 is transverse, fitted to front-wheel-drive cars such as the MINI F55 and F56, BMW X1 F48, X2 F39 and the 2-Series Active Tourer F45 and F46. The turbocharger housings are different because the exhaust and intake face different directions, so a transverse B38 turbo will not fit here and this one will not fit a MINI. If your car is front-wheel drive, message us and we will point you to the correct part.

No. Those use the transverse B38A15 and the turbocharger housing is different. This is the longitudinal B38B15 turbo for rear-wheel-drive BMWs. Send us your VIN and we will confirm which one you need.
