When one absorber starts leaking or knocking, replace at least the pair on the same axle, otherwise the car sits uneven and the new side wears out fast. For older BMWs, a used Original pair costs a fraction of the new price and matches the age of the rest of the suspension. For newer cars you plan to keep long term, new units can be the better buy, and we will tell you honestly when that is the case.

Worn absorbers announce themselves: knocking or clunking over bumps, a floaty ride that keeps bouncing after a hump, the nose diving hard under braking, and uneven cupped wear on the tyres. Oil streaks running down the absorber body mean the seal has let go and that unit is finished.

Quick self-check: push down hard on each corner of the car and let go. One firm rebound is healthy. Two or more bounces means that corner is due. Tyres wearing out fast on one edge tell the same story.

1. Replace in pairs per axle. One new corner against one tired corner leaves the car uneven and kills the new unit early.
2. Know your suspension spec before buying. Standard, M Sport and adaptive setups use different absorbers on many BMW models; tell us your spec or send the VIN and we match it.
3. Inspect for leaks. A used absorber should be dry on the body; light dust is fine, wet oil streaks are a reject.
4. Budget for mounts. If the top mounts and bump stops are original and old, replacing them during the same job is cheap insurance against noise coming back.
