The Mercedes M111 Kompressor is the supercharged 2.0 and 2.3 litre four-cylinder in the W202, the early W203 C200 Kompressor, the W210 and the SLK R170. It comes in two generations, the old M111 (1992 to 2000) and the M111 EVO (2000 to 2004), and we do not swap one for the other, so a used Mercedes M111 engine is matched to your chassis number, not the model name.
At this age we replace rather than rebuild: a used original M111.955 engine is about RM2,800, an M111.973 about RM2,300 bare (engine only, no gearbox) or RM4,200 with gearbox, plus RM1,800 to RM2,500 labour, 5 to 7 days.
This guide is for the owner whose M111 has died or is being quoted a rebuild or a new engine, and for the workshop sourcing one. We sell used original M111 engines and Mercedes engine parts from our shop in Kuala Lumpur. A W203 built from mid-2002, a W204 or a W211 Kompressor has the M271 instead; for those, read our M271 engine problems guide.
Which M111 is in your car: old or EVO, 2.0 or 2.3
Mercedes built the M111 from 1992 to 2004 in two generations. The old M111 runs from 1992 to early 2000. The M111 EVO arrived in February 2000 in the W203 C200 Kompressor and the facelifted SLK, then in the CLK and the E-Class, and ran until 2004.
The EVO has different engine management, ignition coils and supercharger, which is why the two generations are treated as different engines. In the shop we simply call them the old model and the new model, and we tell them apart by the engine number, which starts with the engine code.
The code tells you the capacity too: 111.94x and 111.95x are 2.0 litre, 111.97x and 111.98x are 2.3 litre.

For a row marked ask, we source the engine to order: send us the chassis number on the WhatsApp button below. The C180, C200, E200 and E230 without Kompressor are M111 engines too, but not the same engine; we do not list them on the site, so ask us separately if you need one.
W203 M111 engine or M271: the early W203 trap
The first W203 is the one that catches people. The C180 and C200 Kompressor carried the M111 from 2000; the M271 arrived in the C200 Kompressor in May 2002 and the last M111 W203 was built in August 2002, so a 2002 car can be either. Owners mix the two up, and an M111 is not an M271; the chassis number settles which one your car has. If yours turns out to be an M271, the M271 guide has its own prices.
We learned the chassis-number rule the hard way. A W203 owner ordered an M111 from us, sure of the model; we pulled the engine and sent it over, and only when it was being fitted did it turn out to be the wrong one. We exchanged it for the right engine, and since then no M111 leaves without the chassis number checked.
The two engines on the site now are the M111.955 for the W203 C200 Kompressor and the M111.973 SLK 230 Kompressor with gearbox, in Kuala Lumpur.
Knowing which M111 you have is half the job. The other half is knowing whether the engine is really finished or one part has let go.
What goes wrong with an M111
The M111 has a reputation as a tough engine, and the youngest of these cars is now over twenty years old. Four faults come up on it. The two we see most in our shop are the camshaft adjuster magnet and the supercharger, and none of the four, on its own, means the engine is finished.
Oil in the engine ECU from the camshaft adjuster magnet
One of the two we see most. The camshaft adjuster magnet on the front of the engine starts to weep oil, and the oil wicks along the wiring harness into the engine ECU. The car comes in not starting, with a warning light, or shaking; we have had all three. The engine itself is fine; the ECU is the casualty. This one gets diagnosed, not guessed, at our engine workshop in Kuala Lumpur.
Supercharger noise
The other one we see often. The Eaton supercharger, which some owners call the M111 compressor, whines or rattles when its bearings wear, and on the old engine the electromagnetic clutch that engages it adds a noise of its own. A noisy supercharger does not mean a finished engine. We sell the M111 supercharger on its own, so WhatsApp us for the price; it sits with our other M111 engine parts. (The aircond compressor is a different part; it is here.)
Head gasket and air flow meter
These two are less common, and both are fixed with a repair, not a new engine. The head gasket on an engine this old can start to seep oil or coolant. The air flow meter (HFM) gives a sluggish car and an engine light, and the fix is the meter, not the engine. Both are on the list of Mercedes engine parts we stock or source.
Not sure which of these you have, or whether the engine is really finished: the RM180 check at our Kuala Lumpur workshop is deducted from the labour if we do the job. When the engine itself is finished, the question is no longer which part. It is rebuild or replace.
Repair or replace: why we replace at this age
We replace. On a car this old the labour on a rebuild is simply not worth it, so we fit a used original M111 of the same code as yours in our workshop.
Fitting is RM1,800 to RM2,500 and takes 5 to 7 days. Coding is usually not needed, because your engine ECU stays with the car; if your car does need it, we say so in the quote. The engine comes with a 30-day warranty. The job is our engine and gearbox replacement service; the engine comes from our own shelf, with the rest of our Mercedes-Benz parts.
Before the engine comes off the shelf, we check three things against your chassis number: the generation, the capacity, and whether it is a Kompressor engine.
Buying a used M111 engine: what we match before it leaves the shop
Send us the car model, the year and the chassis number; the engine number too, if you can see it on the block. The three checks run on those before you buy, not after the engine has been shipped, whether we fit it at our Kuala Lumpur workshop or your own workshop does.
Two swaps we do not do: a non-Kompressor M111 into a Kompressor car, and an EVO engine into an old-model car. Whether another workshop will, we cannot say.
Will it fit?
It fits because the match is to your chassis number, not to the model you tell us; the W203 case above is why we made that a rule. The engine itself is an original unit that has never been opened. Once it is sold and before it ships, we pressure test it and send you a video of it turning over; where the donor car's mileage is on record, we pass it on.
