Mercedes M271 Engine Problems (W204 C200, W212 E250): Cold-Start Rattle, Repair Costs and When to Replace the Engine in Malaysia

By the M.S. Motor Technical Team·European car specialists since 1997

The M271 engine is the 1.8-litre four-cylinder in the W204 C180, C200 and C250, the W212 E200 and E250, the SLK R172 and the C207 coupe. Four complaints bring these cars to our Kuala Lumpur workshop: a rattle for a few seconds on a cold start, an engine that cranks but will not start, an engine light with no power, and oil that keeps needing a top-up. The rattle is the one that decides the engine's future: the M271's known weak point, the timing chain and its plastic guides.

Our answer to the rattle is a replacement engine. For the CGI cars that is a used M271 860 at RM6,500 with your old engine traded in, plus RM1,800 to RM2,500 to fit, with coding quoted separately; for a Kompressor car, ask us about stock. With only the engine light or an oil leak, and no rattle, we would not tell you to replace the engine.

There are two versions. Kompressor cars up to about 2009 are supercharged, CGI cars from 2009 onwards are turbocharged, and what goes wrong differs a little between them, so this guide says which is which each time. The badge on the boot tells you which one you have, KOMPRESSOR or CGI, and so does the chassis number.

The W221 S400 is an M276, a different engine. A C200 or C300 from 2014 onwards has the newer M274, which knocks for its own reasons; that one is covered in our M274 knocking guide.

We start with the rattle because it is the expensive one.

The Cold-Start Rattle: Timing Chain, Plastic Guides, and Why We Replace the Engine

You start the car in the morning and for the first few seconds there is a rattle from the front of the engine. Then it settles. That is the sound every M271 owner ends up searching for, and it is the engine's known weak point: the timing chain runs on plastic guides, the guides wear, the chain goes slack, and the camshaft adjusters at the front of the engine wear along with it. Kompressor engines get it most. The later CGI engines are known to last better.

A rattle only in the first seconds of a cold start is the M271 chain problem; a noise that is there all the time is something else. On the Kompressor, owners report the supercharger itself rarely fails, and the noises on that version are more often from the belt and clutch side.

Leave it long enough and the chain can jump, and then the valves get damaged too. We do not tell owners how long they can keep driving on it. The sooner it is dealt with, the better.

We do not quote anything on the noise alone. The car comes in for the RM180 inspection, and that RM180 is taken off the labour if we do the job; what the inspection covers is on our vehicle diagnostic and repair page.

On the M271 we do not do the timing repair. We replace the engine: a used M271 860 bare engine, engine kosong, at RM6,500 with your old engine traded in, RM1,800 to RM2,500 to fit, 5 to 7 days, and a 30-day warranty that covers the engine only. Coding the engine to your car is quoted separately. Other workshops do the chain-and-guides job. Get both quotes and weigh them against what the car is worth.

The obvious question: if the plastic guides wear out, won't a used engine do the same thing? The engine we sell is the M271 860, the CGI version, the later design known to hold its timing better. Our engines come from Japan and Singapore, low-mileage markets, never from local cars, so they have covered far less than the engine coming out.

Every one gets a compression test before it leaves, which shows it holds pressure, and it carries a 30-day warranty. They do not leave our workshop rattling. The 860 fits the CGI cars; Kompressor owners, ask us about stock.

The job itself is our engine and gearbox replacement service. If you want a complete unit rather than a bare engine, our W204 M271 halfcut engine and gearbox set is the full front cut.

The Other Three Complaints

Cranks but will not start: the engine ECU

Water-damaged Mercedes M271 860 engine ECU opened at M.S. Motor's Kuala Lumpur workshop, two views of the same circuit board

The car turns over and does not catch, sometimes with a warning light, sometimes not. On the M271 the engine ECU is the first thing we check and the part in our recent no-start cases; the scan confirms it before you buy.

We stock the tested used M271 860 CGI engine ECU at RM1,500 and the W204 engine ECU at RM1,200. A used ECU has to be coded to your car: RM350 here, RM500 if it has water damage.

One recent case: a W204 with the M271 860, no start, quoted a very high figure elsewhere. It needed the engine ECU; we fitted a tested used unit, coded it, and the car went home on the same job.

Engine light on, car feels weak

The engine light comes on, the car feels weak, sometimes it will not rev past a point because the engine is in limp mode. We do not guess at this one: on the M271 the same symptom comes from parts that cost nowhere near the same. From our own invoices on these cars:

  • Boost or vacuum leak. On the CGI a split turbo hose is the common one, from about RM250 for the hose.
  • Thermostat. RM200 to RM320 for the part, RM180 to RM380 labour.
  • Camshaft side. A camshaft sensor is RM80 used or RM280 new, with RM100 to RM180 labour.
  • Ignition. Spark plugs RM120 to RM320 a set, an ignition coil RM180.

A RM250 hose and a timing job are too far apart to guess between, so scan first. The RM180 inspection covers the scan; more on our vehicle diagnostic and repair page. The figures above are reference prices as of September 2026; WhatsApp us for today's price.

Keeps needing oil: leaking or burning?

M271 oil consumption is talked about a lot on the forums; in our workshop it is the least common of the four. What we want to know first is not how much oil the engine uses but where it goes, because the same symptom can come from two different problems.

  • Oil leak. The valve cover oil seal ages and lets oil out: wet patches on top of the engine, drips on the floor. This is the version we see, and a tested used M271 valve cover is RM400.
  • Oil burning. No visible leak, the level still drops, sometimes blue smoke on a cold start. Owners report this more on the Kompressor than the CGI, and it points inside the engine rather than at a seal.

Either way, once the oil light comes on, stop guessing: the car goes on the lift and we quote from what we see. Part prices here are reference prices as of September 2026; WhatsApp us for today's price.

If the car has the engine light with no power, or an oil leak, and no rattle, we do not tell you to replace the engine, and we do not judge it on the spot. The car comes in for the RM180 inspection, we issue a quotation, and if you go ahead the RM180 comes off the labour.

If the rattle is already there, bring the car in sooner rather than later.

If several things are wrong at once, it depends on the total. When patching them one by one adds up to about the same money, replacing the engine is the better call: when an engine is replaced, the valve cover gasket and the oil seals have to be renewed anyway, because those gaskets age.

For the Kompressor cars that do need one, the tested used M271 supercharger in the table (some owners call it the compressor) is where most of the supercharger repair cost sits. The M271 CGI alternator is in stock as well.

The engine is fitted and coded at the same workshop, so you deal with one place for the whole job.

What to Do Next

If it is the rattle, the decision is a timing repair somewhere else against a replacement engine here, so get the two quotes and weigh them against what the car is worth. If it is any of the other three, the RM180 inspection comes first and the quotation follows it.

Tap the WhatsApp button below with your model, your year and which of the four complaints you have. Not sure whether yours is a Kompressor or a CGI? Send the chassis number too. A replacement engine takes 5 to 7 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the common M271 engine problems?

Four things bring M271 cars to our workshop: a rattle for a few seconds on a cold start, an engine that cranks but will not start, an engine light with no power, and oil that keeps needing a top-up. The rattle is the engine's known weak point, the timing chain and its plastic guides, and it is the one we answer with a replacement engine. The no-start, in our recent cases, has been the engine ECU. The other two need a scan before any money is spent.

Why does my M271 rattle on a cold start?

It is the M271's known weak point. The timing chain runs on plastic guides that wear with age; the chain goes slack and the camshaft adjusters at the front of the engine wear with it. The noise is loudest at startup, in the first seconds after a cold start. Bring the car in for the RM180 inspection before any part is ordered.

Should I repair the timing chain or replace the M271 engine?

Our workshop replaces the engine rather than doing the timing repair: a used M271 860 bare engine at RM6,500 with your old engine traded in, RM1,800 to RM2,500 labour, 5 to 7 days, and a 30-day warranty that covers the engine only; coding is quoted separately. Other workshops offer the chain-and-guides job. Get both quotes and weigh them against the car's value.

How much is a used (second-hand) M271 engine in Malaysia?

We have used M271 860 bare engines (engine kosong; you will also see it written M271860 or 271.860) for sale at RM6,500 with your old engine traded in, or RM500 to RM700 more without trade-in. Fitting is RM1,800 to RM2,500 and takes 5 to 7 days; coding is quoted separately. Prices change with stock; WhatsApp us for today's price.

My M271 cranks but won't start. Is it the ECU?

On this engine the ECU is the first thing we check, and it has been the part in our recent M271 no-start cases; the scan confirms it before you buy. We stock a tested used M271 860 CGI engine ECU at RM1,500 and a W204 engine ECU at RM1,200. A used ECU must be coded to your car, RM350 here, or RM500 if the ECU has water damage.

Will a used M271 engine rattle as well?

The engine we sell is the M271 860, the CGI version, the later design known to hold its timing better. Our engines come from Japan and Singapore, low-mileage markets, never from local cars. Every one gets a compression test before it leaves and carries a 30-day warranty. They do not leave our workshop rattling. The 860 fits the CGI cars; Kompressor owners should ask us about stock.

What is the difference between M271 Kompressor and CGI?

The Kompressor is the supercharged version up to about 2009; the CGI is the turbocharged, direct-injection version from 2009 onwards. The badge on the boot says which one you have, and the chassis number confirms it. Owners report the supercharger itself rarely fails and Kompressor noises are more often from the belt and clutch side, while the CGI is known to hold its timing better. Either way, the diagnosis at the workshop decides.

Is the M274 the same engine as the M271?

No. The M274 replaced the M271 in the C200 and C300 from around 2014 and knocks for its own reasons; we have a separate M274 guide. The W221 S400 runs the M276 and the older W203 C200 Kompressor runs the M111, both different engines.
