BMW's 1.5 litre three cylinder turbo comes in two versions that share a name and almost nothing else. B38A15 sits sideways in front-wheel-drive cars (MINI F55 and F56, X1 F48, 2-Series Active Tourer). B38B15 sits front to back in rear-wheel-drive cars (318i F30, 116i and 118i F20, 218i F22). They do not swap into each other, and neither do their turbochargers. Here is how to tell which one you own before you buy anything.

We get this call most weeks: someone with a 318i finds a cheap MINI B38 engine, or someone with a MINI finds a BMW B38 turbo, and assumes 1.5 litre three cylinder means one part. It does not. This guide saves you that mistake.

Which B38 Do I Have, A15 or B15?

Work it out from how your car drives its wheels. If the car is front-wheel drive (every MINI hatch, X1 F48, 2-Series Active Tourer) you have the B38A15, mounted transversely, sideways across the engine bay. If the car is rear-wheel drive (318i, 116i, 118i, 218i, 418i) you have the B38B15, mounted longitudinally, front to back. That single difference changes the sump, the mounts, the ancillary layout and the gearbox interface.

How Do I Tell Without a Scanner?

Open the bonnet and look at the accessory belt and pulleys. If they face the side of the car, the engine is mounted sideways and you have the A15. If they face the front of the car, the engine runs front to back and you have the B15. Your VIN plate and any proper scan report will confirm the full code.

If you are not sure whether your car even has a B38, count the ignition coils. Three coils means a three cylinder, so B38. Four means a four cylinder, which on an F30 usually means the older N13 or the N20.

Which Cars Got Which B38?

B38A15 and B38B15 by chassis

Engine codeHow it sitsDriveCars that got it
B38A15Transverse, sideways across the bayFront-wheel driveMINI F55 / F56 (One, Cooper), BMW X1 F48, X2 F39, 2-Series Active and Gran Tourer F45 / F46, 1-Series F40
B38B15Longitudinal, front to backRear-wheel driveBMW 318i F30 / F31, 116i and 118i F20 / F21, 218i F22 / F23, 418i F32 / F36

There are further sub-codes (U0, U1, M0, M1 and the hybrid K15 in the i8), which mostly mark power output and model year rather than a different physical layout. The A or B letter is the one that decides whether a part will physically fit your car.

Can I Put a MINI B38 Engine in My BMW 318i?

No. A MINI F56 engine is a transverse B38A15 and a 318i needs a longitudinal B38B15. Mounting points, sump, ancillary drive and the gearbox mating face are all different, so it is not a swap, it is a fabrication project that still ends badly. The same applies in reverse: a 318i engine will not go into a MINI.

This is the single most expensive misunderstanding on this engine, because the two engines are genuinely close in price and both are listed as "B38 1.5T" everywhere online.

Are the B38 Turbochargers Interchangeable?

No, and this catches even experienced buyers. The turbocharger housings are different between the transverse and longitudinal versions, because the exhaust and intake have to point in different directions in a sideways engine than in a front-to-back one. A B38 turbo is not simply a B38 turbo. Match it to your engine code, not to the engine family.

The rear-wheel-drive B38B15 turbo we stock carries part number 7633795 (BMW writes it as 11 65 7 633 795), a Continental unit used on the RWD 1.5 three cylinder cars. You can see it on our B38 turbocharger listing.

The Mistake We Correct Every Week

Customers regularly contact us ready to buy, convinced that the engine or the turbo from the other version will fit their car. It is an honest mistake: the engine name is identical, the capacity is identical, the cylinder count is identical, and every parts site on the internet lists both under "B38 1.5T". Every time, we tell them the same thing we are telling you here, and we point them to the right part instead of taking the order.

That is the reason this page exists. Losing a sale is cheaper for both of us than shipping an engine that will never bolt in.

What Actually Fails on a B38?

The B38 is a genuinely better engine than the N13 it replaced, so this is a short list rather than a horror story. Watch these:

B38 wear points worth knowing

What you noticeLikely causeWhen
Coolant warning, temperature rising, weak cabin heatElectric water pump and thermostat housingCommonly 80,000 to 120,000 km
Rattle on cold startTiming chain wear on higher mileage enginesHigh mileage, not a routine item
Oil level dropping between servicesOil consumption, a known B38 complaintAny mileage, monitor it
Shaking at idle, worse in gearEngine mounts, more pronounced than on the four cylinder B48Wear item, check before blaming the engine
Power loss, limp mode under boostTurbocharger or boost pipeworkOccasional

Two honest notes. A three cylinder vibrates more than a four by design, so some idle shake is normal and worn mounts exaggerate it: check the mounts before you fear the engine. And the electric water pump is the one to take seriously, because on this engine a cooling failure is what turns a cheap part into an expensive one.

Is the B38 Reliable? The Honest Answer

Yes, more than its cylinder count suggests, and clearly more than the engine it replaced. If you moved from an F30 316i with the N13 to a B38 car, you moved to a better engine. The B38's weak spots are cooling components and the turbo rather than anything structural, and high mileage examples keep running. Keep the oil changed on a short interval and take a coolant warning seriously, and it is a sound engine.

What Does a Used B38 Cost in Malaysia?

These are our prices, and the gap between them is exactly why identifying your version first matters.

B38 replacement options in Malaysia

What you needPriceWarranty and lead time
MINI B38 engine kosong (transverse A15)RM5,00030 day warranty, about 1 week
BMW F30 B38 engine (longitudinal B15)RM9,00030 day warranty, about 1 week
MINI B38 halfcut, engine and gearboxRM14,500 to RM15,00030 day warranty, about 1 week
B38 turbocharger (match to A15 or B15)From RM2,00030 day warranty

Note the spread: the same nominal engine is RM5,000 in one form and RM9,000 in the other. Anyone quoting you a "B38 1.5T engine" without telling you which version is either guessing or selling you the wrong one.

Engine Only, or Halfcut?

Take the engine kosong when your gearbox and front end are healthy and only the engine has failed. Take the halfcut when the gearbox is also suspect, when the car has front end damage as well, or when you would rather have one matched donor than parts from several cars. On a MINI the halfcut also brings the gearbox, which matters because gearbox and engine faults on these cars often arrive together.

For MINI we stock the F55 / F56 B38 engine kosong and complete B38 halfcuts with engine and gearbox, with more in the MINI B38 listings and MINI halfcut listings. For the rear-wheel-drive BMW side, current B38 stock sits in our B38 engine parts and B38 turbo pages, and not every unit is listed online yet, so message us for what is on the floor today.

Wider ranges: BMW engine parts, BMW halfcut, BMW parts, MINI Cooper parts and MINI halfcut. By chassis: F30 3 Series, F20 1 Series, X1 F48.

If your MINI is already showing the symptoms rather than a dead engine, start with our MINI F55 and F56 B38 problems guide instead.

What To Do Next

  1. Check how your car drives: front-wheel drive means A15, rear-wheel drive means B15.
  2. Look at the belt pulleys: facing the side means transverse, facing the front means longitudinal.
  3. Never buy on "B38 1.5T" alone, not the engine and not the turbo. Get the full code.
  4. Send us your VIN before you pay anyone, ours or otherwise. It takes a minute and it prevents a five figure mistake.

Buy the Right B38, Once

The 1.5 three cylinder is a good engine let down by a confusing name. Get the letter right, A15 for sideways front-wheel-drive cars and B15 for front-to-back rear-wheel-drive cars, and everything after that is straightforward. M.S. Motor stocks tested original used B38 engines, halfcuts and turbochargers for both versions, fits and codes them in house, and will tell you when the part you asked for is the wrong one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the BMW B38A15 and B38B15?

The letter marks how the engine is mounted. B38A15 is transverse, mounted sideways, and is used in front-wheel-drive cars such as the MINI F55 and F56, BMW X1 F48, X2 F39 and the 2-Series Active Tourer F45 and F46. B38B15 is longitudinal, mounted front to back, and is used in rear-wheel-drive cars such as the 318i F30, 116i and 118i F20, 218i F22 and 418i F32. They are not interchangeable.

Can I fit a MINI Cooper B38 engine into a BMW 318i?

No. The MINI engine is a transverse B38A15 and the 318i needs a longitudinal B38B15. The mounting points, sump, ancillary drive and gearbox mating face are all different. It is not a swap. The same is true in reverse, a 318i engine will not fit a MINI.

Are B38 turbochargers interchangeable between BMW and MINI?

No. The turbocharger housings differ between the transverse and longitudinal versions because the exhaust and intake face different directions. Always match the turbo to your full engine code rather than to the B38 family name. The rear-wheel-drive B38B15 turbo carries part number 7633795, written by BMW as 11 65 7 633 795.

How do I know if my car has a B38 engine?

Count the ignition coils under the bonnet. Three coils means a three cylinder, which is the B38. Four coils means a four cylinder, which on an F30 usually means the older N13 or the N20. To then tell A15 from B15, check whether the car is front-wheel drive, which is A15, or rear-wheel drive, which is B15.

Is the BMW B38 three cylinder engine reliable?

Yes, more than the cylinder count suggests, and clearly better than the N13 it replaced. The weak points are cooling components rather than anything structural: the electric water pump and thermostat housing commonly need attention around 80,000 to 120,000 km. Oil consumption and engine mount wear are the other known complaints. Some idle vibration is normal on a three cylinder.

Why does my B38 keep losing coolant or overheating?

The usual cause is the electric water pump or the thermostat housing, which have a shorter life than older mechanical designs and commonly fail between 80,000 and 120,000 km. Symptoms are a coolant warning, a rising temperature gauge and weak cabin heat. Treat it urgently, because on this engine a cooling failure is what turns a cheap repair into an expensive one.

How much does a used B38 engine cost in Malaysia?

A MINI B38 engine kosong, the transverse A15 version, is RM5,000. A BMW F30 B38 engine, the longitudinal B15 version, is RM9,000. A MINI B38 halfcut with engine and gearbox is RM14,500 to RM15,000. All come with a 30 day warranty and take about one week. A B38 turbocharger starts from RM2,000, matched to your version.

Should I buy an engine kosong or a halfcut?

Take the engine kosong when the gearbox and front end are healthy and only the engine has failed. Take the halfcut when the gearbox is also suspect, when there is front end damage as well, or when you would rather have one matched donor than parts from several cars. On a MINI the halfcut also brings the gearbox, which matters because gearbox and engine faults often arrive together on these cars.
