If your BMW 316i or 116i rattles for a few seconds on cold start, throws a Drivetrain Malfunction warning, or has started drinking oil, you are looking at the N13 engine's three signature faults: a worn timing chain, a cracked PCV membrane in the valve cover, or a failing electric coolant pump. Each shows a different fault code, each costs something very different to fix, and on a 316i the right answer is often not the one the dealer quotes.

Which Engine Is Actually in My BMW 316i?
In Malaysia your F30 316i can have one of two completely different engines. Earlier cars run the N13B16, a 1.6 litre turbo four making about 136 hp. Later cars run the B38B15, a 1.5 litre turbo three. Same badge, almost nothing else in common: different faults, different parts, different bills. Find out which one you have before you spend a single ringgit.
There is a check anyone can do in ten seconds. Open the bonnet and count the ignition coils. Three coils means the three cylinder B38. Four coils means the N13. Your scan report and VIN plate will confirm it.
This is exactly why so much 316i advice online is useless to you. Some of it describes the N13, some describes the B38, and plenty of it is actually about the two litre N20 from the 320i, which is a different engine again. The N13 itself was co-developed by BMW and PSA under the joint Prince programme, which makes it a cousin of the MINI N14 and N18, and the same N13 sits in the F20 114i, 116i and 118i as well as the F30 3 Series. Everything below is about the N13. If you counted three coils, you have the B38, and that engine has its own separate story.
What Are the Most Common N13 Engine Problems?
Five faults account for most of what comes through our workshop on this engine. They cluster around the same mileage, and that clustering is the single most important thing to understand about owning one.

Notice how many arrive together. That is the N13's real character: not one dramatic failure, but four or five wear items reaching the end of their life inside the same service window.
My 316i Shows Drivetrain Malfunction. What Does It Mean?
Drivetrain Malfunction is a message, not a diagnosis. On the N13 it has at least three completely different causes, and only a proper BMW scan tells them apart. Timing and VANOS faults, a dying electric coolant pump, and a boost or charge pressure leak all trigger the same yellow warning. Replacing parts before reading codes is how owners pay twice.
A quick way to narrow it down before the scan: if it appears together with a cold start rattle, think chain. If it appears with a temperature warning or after crawling in traffic, think coolant pump. If it appears only under hard acceleration and the car feels flat, think boost leak.
The Cold Start Rattle: Timing Chain, Guides and Tensioner
This is the N13's headline fault and the one that ends engines. For the first two to five seconds after a cold start you hear a metallic rattle, then oil pressure builds and it goes quiet. The cause is a stretched chain, worn plastic guides, or a tensioner that no longer holds pressure. It typically shows up around 150,000 km, and earlier on cars kept on long life oil intervals.
Two pieces of good news. First, on the N13 the chain sits at the front of the engine, not behind the gearbox. The horror stories about pulling the transmission out belong to the N47 diesel, so if someone quotes you a gearbox removal for a chain job on a petrol 316i, they are quoting the wrong engine. Second, chain wear can be measured on a proper diagnostic tool, so you do not have to guess.
The warning is what the plastic does when it gets old, and we have seen exactly where that ends.
In Malaysian traffic and heat, the single most effective thing you can do is stop using the long life interval and change oil every 10,000 km.
A Real Case From Our Workshop
On one car that reached us, the plastic guide inside the timing chain had gone brittle with age. It worked loose and broke away. On the N13 that loose piece does not simply drop somewhere harmless: when the Valvetronic motor happens to be turned to a certain angle, the broken guide gets struck, and the damage carries into the engine. By the time the car arrived, that had already happened, and the only sensible repair left was a replacement engine.
That car began with exactly the few seconds of cold start rattle this guide opens with. That is the whole argument for not postponing it: the rattle is cheap, what the rattle turns into is not.
The One Nobody Warns You About: The Accessory Belt on Automatics
If your 316i or 116i is an automatic, the accessory belt deserves attention no service schedule gives it. When the belt breaks, debris can damage the automatic transmission fluid cooler lines running right beside it. What starts as a snapped belt can end as transmission damage. Replace it on condition, not on hope, and inspect it any time the engine is open for other work.
Misfires and Oil Consumption: The PCV and Valve Cover
The crankcase ventilation membrane is built into the N13 valve cover, and when it cracks the engine draws unmetered air and starts burning oil. Owners notice a rough idle, a misfire code or two, and an oil level that keeps dropping with no puddle on the driveway. It is not usually repairable in isolation, so the valve cover comes off as an assembly. While you are in there, spark plugs on this engine are a 40,000 km item, not a 100,000 km one.
The N13 Fault Code Map
Codes below are as reported by workshops and owners, so treat them as a map rather than gospel. Your scan is the source of truth. One important note: generic OBD2 scanners frequently miss BMW specific codes on this engine. A clean cheap scan does not mean a clean engine.

If the chain has actually jumped you will often see VANOS codes too, which is why a VANOS code on a high mileage N13 should never be treated as just a solenoid until the timing has been checked.

Repair or Replace? The Honest 316i Maths
Read the last three rows of that table again, because they are the whole argument. A complete halfcut, engine and gearbox and front end together, is RM13,000. A single brand new engine is RM10,000 to RM20,000. And if the engine is all you need, it is RM4,500. On this car, buying new is the expensive way to get less.
The other half of the calculation is the one most guides avoid. On a 316i or 116i, the timing chain, the valve cover and PCV, the coolant pump, the turbo plumbing rubber and the plugs all reach the end of their life within the same stretch of mileage. Quote them one at a time and each looks reasonable. Add them up on an entry level car and the total starts competing with what the car is worth.
So the real question is not "chain job or used engine". It is "how many of these five am I about to pay for". If the chain is the only thing due and the rest of the engine is healthy, fix the chain. If the rattle arrived on top of oil consumption, a coolant pump warning and a boost leak, the maths has already made the decision for you.
