Volvo C70 V50 Xenon HID Headlight Ballast 1 307 329 098 - Used Original Parts

Diagnosis and Common Symptoms

From a workshop perspective, the Xenon ballast is the high-voltage power supply for your headlight's HID bulb. Failure is common due to age, internal component degradation from heat cycles, or—most frequently—water ingress from a compromised headlight seal. A faulty ballast will prevent the xenon bulb from igniting or maintaining a stable arc, leading to critical lighting failure.

Common symptoms include a completely dead headlight, intermittent flickering, or a light that turns on for a few seconds before shutting off. You may also hear a buzzing or clicking sound from the headlamp assembly. On the dashboard, this typically triggers a "Dipped Beam Failure" or similar bulb warning message. Relevant fault codes stored in the Central Electronic Module (CEM) often include CEM-8A21, CEM-8A22, or other gas discharge lamp errors, pointing directly to a control unit fault. For a definitive diagnosis, swap the suspected faulty ballast with the one from the working headlight; if the fault moves to the other side, the ballast is confirmed as the cause.
