Why BMW Electric Water Pumps Fail, and What We Stock
The electric water pump on BMW N20 and N52 era engines is a known wear item. When it starts failing you see the overheat warning, the temperature climbs in traffic, or the car goes into limp mode. Do not drive on: overheating an N20 gets expensive fast.
BMW part 11517597181 fits F30, F10, F25, X1 and X3 with the N20 engine, and it is our most requested cooling part. Current stock: N20 electric water pump RM450, B48 hybrid electric water pump RM650, auxiliary coolant pump for F15 F30 G30 hybrids RM650. All tested before sale, with warranty.
One thing most sellers will not tell you: the N20 electric water pump comes with two different connector sockets, a flat elongated type and a square type. The wrong socket will not plug into your wiring. Before you buy from anyone, us included, snap a photo of your old pump’s connector and send it on WhatsApp; we match it before you pay.
Prices follow current stock and change as units sell. WhatsApp for a confirmed quote.
How to Confirm It Is the Water Pump
Overheating has more than one cause, so confirm before spending. Three signs point at the electric water pump: the temperature climbs in slow traffic but recovers at highway speed, the overheat warning appears together with reduced engine power, and a diagnostic scan shows electric coolant pump codes (BMW codes in the 2E81 to 2E85 range on N20 and N52 era engines).
One thing that fools people: the electric pump keeps running for a few minutes after you switch off the engine. That is normal cooling behaviour, not a fault. What matters is the scan result and whether the pump responds to an activation test. If you are not sure, drive in early morning or evening heat traffic to our shop and we test it on the car before you buy anything.
Used Water Pump Buying Checklist
- Part number must match. For N20 cars the common one is 11517597181; read it off your old pump, not off a forum post.
- Connector socket must match. As above: flat elongated or square, they do not interchange. Photo of your old plug settles it in seconds.
- Ask how the unit was tested and what warranty it carries. Every pump we sell is tested before sale, and the warranty terms are confirmed in writing with your quote.
- Plan the installation. The cooling system needs a proper bleed procedure after the swap or you will chase phantom overheating. Our workshop does the replacement and the bleed in the same visit.
How Ordering Works
- WhatsApp us your car model, year and chassis (or just the VIN), plus a photo of your old part if you have it.
- We cross-check against the donor car and send you photos of the actual unit, the price, and the warranty terms.
- Pay only after everything matches. Collect in KL, have our workshop install it in the same compound, or we ship nationwide.
