Failing Alternator Symptoms, and What We Stock
A failing alternator shows up as the battery light on the dash, dim lights at idle, or a car that needs jump starts even with a new battery. Replacing with a used Original unit is the economic fix for E and F chassis BMWs.
Current stock: E90 E92 E60 alternator (12317558220) at RM600, F30 F10 F25 N20 alternator (12317605478) at RM550. Both tested before sale, with warranty. We also keep used Original alternators for Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche.
Before you buy any alternator, check the amp rating. The same engine can be fitted with alternators of different output depending on the car’s spec, and the rating is printed on the alternator body. A unit rated too low will not keep up with the car’s electrical load. Match your original unit’s rating; send a photo of the label on WhatsApp and we confirm before you pay.
Prices follow current stock and change as units sell. WhatsApp for a confirmed quote.
How to Confirm It Is the Alternator
A healthy charging system holds roughly 13.8 to 14.8 volts at idle with the engine running. If a multimeter shows battery voltage barely above 12 volts while running, the alternator is not charging. On BSD equipped BMW engines the DME also logs a specific code for this: 2E97, generator fault.
We keep a full plain-language write-up of that code, what causes it and whether you can keep driving, in our fault code library: BMW 2E97 explained. Short version: the most common culprits are a failed regulator or BSD wiring, so scan before you buy anything.
One more trap: a worn overrunning alternator pulley can mimic a dying alternator, with belt squeal and flickering charge. It is a much cheaper fix. Drop by and we can check both on the car.
Used Alternator Buying Checklist
- Amp rating must match your original unit. As above, the number is printed on the alternator body; too low and it cannot feed the car.
- Part number check. Our BMW stock: 12317558220 for E90 E92 E60, 12317605478 for F30 F10 F25 with N20. Read yours off the old unit or send the VIN.
- Ask how it was tested and what warranty it carries. Every alternator we sell is tested before sale, warranty terms confirmed in writing with your quote.
- Check the pulley while you are there. If the overrunning pulley is worn, replace it during the same job and save a second labour charge.
How Ordering Works
- WhatsApp us your car model, year and chassis (or just the VIN), plus a photo of your old part if you have it.
- We cross-check against the donor car and send you photos of the actual unit, the price, and the warranty terms.
- Pay only after everything matches. Collect in KL, have our workshop install it in the same compound, or we ship nationwide.
