BMW CD0487: ZGM Gateway FlexRay Sync Failed
BMW CD0487 means the Central Gateway Module, ZGM, could not establish a common FlexRay time base with the other modules on the bus. It is usually found together with 801C20 and is most often the fingerprint of a past low voltage event, most commonly a weak battery or a battery disconnected without registration, rather than a broken gateway.

- F series BMWs with a FlexRay bus and a Central Gateway Module. BMW documentation for the F30 describes the ZGM, BDC, DSC, ICM and DME/DDE as the FlexRay synchronisation nodes, and states that communication from the ZGM to at least two of those control units is required for fault free synchronisation. Independent workshop scan reports show the same cluster on an F20 120d N47 and an F30 328i N20. Our own ISTA readings: CD0487 on five cars, one F20 2013 and four F30s 2013 to 2015, with 801C20 stored on two of them.

Symptoms
- Often no driver symptom at all, the codes only show up during a scan
- A warning light or message that appeared once and cleared itself after restart
- In the serious version, the scan shows several modules missing, no communication with DME, DSC or EPS
- In the serious version, engine cranks but does not start, or does not crank at all
- Steering assist, stability control or drivetrain warnings appearing together during the same event
Common causes, most likely first

Flat, weak or aged 12V battery causing a voltage collapse
Most common cause. Both known scan reports also showed total discharge and undervoltage faults in FEM, ACSM, cluster, ICM and EPS at the same time

Battery disconnected, jump started or replaced without proper registration
Produces the same voltage event signature and also fills up the gateway fault memory

A control unit offline or missing from the bus
Gateway cannot reach the minimum number of synchronisation partners it needs

Affects the twisted pair between the gateway and a synchronisation node

This is the last thing to suspect, not the first, and mostly appears in cases where the ZGM was already touched

Can I still drive with BMW CD0487 stored?
If the car starts, drives normally and the scan is otherwise clean apart from these stored entries, this is usually a historic entry from a voltage event that has already passed, and it is reasonable to keep driving while the battery and charging system get checked. If the codes are live and modules are missing from the scan, treat this as a no start risk and do not drive it, since BMW documentation states no engine start is possible when FlexRay communication is actually interrupted.
Does this always mean the ZGM gateway module is faulty?
No. A faulty ZGM is the last thing on the list, not the first. Most cases trace back to a weak or disconnected battery causing a temporary voltage collapse, sometimes a missing module on the bus or a wiring or connector issue. A proper diagnostic read of the live context, not just the stored code, is needed before deciding what is actually wrong.
What does fixing BMW CD0487 involve?
Direction depends on what the live diagnostic context shows at the workshop. Often it points to the battery and charging system, sometimes to a battery sensor, alternator or a FlexRay wiring and connector repair, and only rarely to the gateway module itself.
