BMW A8C7: FRM Terminal 58g Illumination Fault
BMW A8C7 means the FRM footwell module has flagged a fault on terminal 58g, the circuit that dims the instrument cluster, switch and button lights. It most commonly comes from damaged wiring on that circuit, a blown FRM fuse, or the FRM module itself failing, especially after a flat battery.
Quick facts
- System
- Electrical / Lighting Control (FRM)
- Severity
- Moderate
- Can you still drive?
- Short drives only, diagnose soon
- Applies to
- E-series with FRM footwell module: E81/E82/E87/E88 1 Series, E90/E91/E92/E93 3 Series, E84 X1. Confirmed in the field on E90 328i (2008). FRM is also fitted to E70/E71 and Mini ...
Also shown by some scanners as: 0xA8C7, 43207, Clamp 58g defective, Clamb 58g defective, Terminal 58G fault, Klemme 58g, A8C1, A8C2, A8C5, A8C6
Symptoms
- Instrument cluster, switch and button backlighting dead or erratic at night while the buttons still function
- Lock/unlock button lights, ashtray lights, steering wheel lights and window switch lights all unlit
- Dimmer thumbwheel has no effect on dashboard brightness
- Several illumination circuits drop out together rather than just one bulb failing
- Fault stays stored as history even after wiring is repaired, because the FRM short circuit counter has latched
Common causes, most likely first
- 1
Damaged wiring on the grey/red terminal 58g circuit
Most common cause, for example a door harness cable pierced by a screw
- 2
Blown FRM fuse
Usually F41, F81, F84 or F86 on a 2008 E90, or F36, F41, F42, F68 on late 2007 build cars
- 3
FRM internal or output stage failure
Common after a flat battery or a battery change without proper registration
- 4
Latched short circuit counter inside the FRM
Keeps the fault stored until reset with diagnostic software
- 5
A failed switch or cluster illumination unit loading the circuit

Frequently asked questions
Can I still drive with the A8C7 code?
Yes, it is mechanically safe to drive. But dashboard and switch illumination can be dark at night, making the speedometer hard to read, so it should be checked soon and can be an inspection failure point.
Does A8C7 always mean the FRM module needs replacing?
Not always. Cheaper causes like a blown fuse or damaged wiring on the 58g circuit are common and should be checked first. The FRM module itself is usually only the answer after wiring and fuses are ruled out. A proper diagnostic read is needed to confirm the exact cause before deciding.
How do I fix an A8C7 code, what parts are needed?
Depending on the diagnosis, the fix path can involve a fuse in the FRM fuse group, repair of damaged door or body harness wiring on the 58g circuit, a switch or cluster illumination unit, or a used original FRM, FRM2 or FRM3 footwell module which needs coding to the car. Which BMW models does the A8C7 code apply to?
This applies to E-series BMWs fitted with the FRM footwell module: E81/E82/E87/E88 1 Series, E90/E91/E92/E93 3 Series and E84 X1, confirmed in the field on an E90 328i 2008. FRM is also fitted to E70/E71 and Mini R55 to R61, but this specific code reading is E9x-centric and does not apply to F-series cars like F30, which use a different lighting code system.
