BMW 2E82: Electric Coolant Pump Cutoff

BMW fault code 2E82 means the DME cut power to the electric engine coolant pump because it drew too much current, an over-current cutoff. It is most commonly caused by a worn or seizing pump, but a corroded pump connector is also a well known pattern on these engines. A proper diagnostic read is needed to confirm which one before any part is replaced.

Quick facts

System

Severity
Serious
Can you still drive?
Short drives only, diagnose soon
Applies to
BMW engines with an electric main coolant pump: N51, N52, N52K (SI 12 04 05), N20, N26, N55. E60, E90, F10, F25, F30, X1, X3 era.

Also shown by some scanners as: 2E 82

Symptoms

  • Coolant temperature warning appears then clears again after a few minutes
  • Overheating in traffic or right after shutdown, since the pump also runs on afterrun
  • Heater blowing cold air at idle
  • Reduced engine power as the DME protects the engine

Common causes, most likely first

  1. 1

Electric coolant pump failing, worn bearings or a seized impeller raising current draw

    Most common cause

  2. 2

Failed pump electronics or an internal short in the pump controller

  3. 3

Corroded pump connector, a known BMW pattern where crankcase ventilation residue drips onto the plug

Known BMW pattern, worth checking early

  4. 4

Damaged pump wiring or a poor earth connection

  5. 5

Blocked or restricted coolant circuit, often a stuck thermostat, loading the pump

Usually secondary, worth checking if pump is otherwise healthy

  6. 6

    DME output stage fault

    Rarest case

Frequently asked questions

Can I still drive with fault code 2E82?

Treat this one seriously. With the electric coolant pump cut off, the engine can overheat, especially in traffic. If a temperature warning appears, stop the car and do not keep driving. Get it checked at a workshop as soon as possible.

Does 2E82 always mean I need a new water pump?

Not always. A worn or seizing pump is the most common cause, but a corroded pump connector is a known BMW pattern that can trigger the same code without the pump itself being faulty. Wiring, earth connections and a blocked coolant circuit can also load the pump enough to trip this cutoff. A proper diagnostic read at the workshop is needed to confirm which one applies before any part is replaced.

What does fixing 2E82 involve?

The workshop usually starts by checking the pump connector and wiring since corrosion there is a known pattern, before deciding whether the electric water pump itself needs replacing. This is diagnostic and inspection work best done at the workshop, not something to attempt from a description online. WhatsApp us the code and car model for stock and today's price.

Which BMW models does fault code 2E82 apply to?

This applies to BMW engines with an electric main coolant pump, including N51, N52, N52K, N20, N26 and N55, found across E60, E90, F10, F25, F30, X1 and X3 era cars. Related sibling codes 2E81, 2E83, 2E84 and 2E85 cover other faults in the same electric pump system, they are not the same fault as 2E82 and should not be treated as interchangeable.

This page is a reference guide, not a repair instruction. The same code can have more than one cause; a proper scan and physical inspection confirm the actual fault.
