BMW 21A02D: Valve Lift Correction Idle Fault

BMW 21A02D means the DME's valve lift correction at idle went outside its expected window, usually causing rough idle and a hesitation when pulling away. BMW itself points first to outdated DME software needing programming, with a Valvetronic servo motor or eccentric shaft sensor fault next on the list. A proper diagnostic read is needed to confirm which one applies to your car.

Real world reports and our own workshop reads extend the same code to B48 cars, including the 2020 plus Toyota Supra A90 which uses the B48.

    After a battery change, DME work or Valvetronic repair, the stored lift correction may no longer match the engine

    Valvetronic servo motor or eccentric shaft sensor fault

    Includes oil creeping into the sensor connector on some cars

    Worn or binding Valvetronic eccentric shaft

    More common on high mileage engines, first noticed as an idle that will not settle

    Ordinary idle quality faults

    Tired spark plugs, a weak ignition coil, a leaking or dirty injector, or an unmetered air leak can push the correction out of range

Usually yes. The car will normally still drive, and many owners only find this code during a scan with no noticeable symptoms. Treat it as book it in soon rather than stop now. But if the rough running turns into a real misfire, a flashing engine light or a real loss of power, stop driving, because a live misfire can damage the catalytic converter.

Does 21A02D always mean the Valvetronic servo motor is faulty?

No. BMW's own bulletin points first to outdated DME software needing programming, before any part is suspected. The eccentric shaft sensor, worn eccentric shaft, or even ordinary ignition and injector faults can also trigger this code. A proper diagnostic read at the workshop is needed to tell which one applies before any part is replaced.

What does fixing 21A02D involve?

In the plain software case, BMW says no parts should be replaced at all, this is corrected with programming at the workshop. If the diagnostic read points to hardware instead, the part family involved is usually the Valvetronic servo motor or eccentric shaft sensor, and less often ignition coils, spark plugs or a fuel injector. Which BMW models does 21A02D apply to?

BMW's bulletin lists F22, F23, F30, F31, F32, F33, F34, F36, G01 X3, G12, G30 and G32 with B46, B58 or XB1H engines. In our own workshop we have also read this same code on B48 engine cars, including F30 and G01 X3 models, even though BMW's bulletin does not name B48 directly. It has also been reported on B48 powered Toyota Supra A90 models from 2020 onward.
