BMW 00A128: Rain Sensor Hardware Error

BMW 00A128 means the rain/light sensor module has detected an internal hardware fault in its own optical rain-detection stage. It is most commonly the sensor itself failing, or the gel pad seating being disturbed after a windscreen replacement. The car remains safe to drive, but automatic wipers and auto headlights will stop working.

Quick facts

System
Rain / Light Sensor
Severity
Low
Can you still drive?
Yes, safe to drive
Applies to
E-series with a discrete rain/light sensor module: E60, E65, E70, E87, E89, R56 MINI (SPEG). The same A128 fault location is used in the RLS, RLSS and AIC sensor SGBDs.

Also shown by some scanners as: A128

Symptoms

  • Automatic wipers do not respond to rain, or wipe continuously
  • Automatic headlights stay on or fail to switch on
  • Both rain and light automatic functions lost at once, since they share the same sensor
  • Sometimes accompanied by interior-light or LIN communication faults from the same module

Common causes, most likely first

  1. 1

    Rain/light sensor internal electronics failure

The code names a hardware fault, not a signal issue, so this is the most direct explanation

  2. 2

Sensor gel pad detached or windscreen replaced without correctly re-bedding the sensor

Very common after glass replacement, the optical stage then self-tests as failed

  3. 3

LIN supply or wiring fault to the sensor at the mirror base

  4. 4

Wrong or uncoded sensor variant fitted

Frequently asked questions

Can I still drive with BMW code 00A128?

Yes, this is safe to drive. Automatic wipers and auto headlights will stop working, so switch to manual wiper and light settings and take extra care driving in rain at night.

Does this always mean the rain sensor module needs replacing?

Not always. The sensor's own electronics is the most common cause, but after a windscreen replacement the gel pad seating is checked first since a disturbed seating can trigger the same fault without the sensor itself being faulty. A proper diagnostic read at the workshop confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

What does fixing 00A128 involve?

This usually involves the workshop checking the sensor's seating and wiring first, and if the sensor's own hardware is confirmed faulty, fitting a used rain/light sensor module of the matching variant. WhatsApp us the code and car model for stock and today's price.

Which BMW models does this code apply to?

This applies to E-series models with a discrete rain/light sensor module, including E60, E65, E70, E87, E89, and the R56 MINI. The fault is reported by the sensor module itself, not the JBE gateway, even though it may be read through the JBE/FEM.

This page is a reference guide, not a repair instruction. The same code can have more than one cause; a proper scan and physical inspection confirm the actual fault.
